It WILL be interesting to see how things shake out. As we all know, the
"legacy" car makers have long used lack of charging infrastructure as an
argument against EV adoption. And, they have refused to either supply
or support reliable, well positioned public charging. All except Tesla.
Strange, isn't it? I would have thought the auto companies would jump on
the chance to monopolize the source of "fuel" for their EVs. GM set out
to do exactly that with their Magnecharger for the EV1.
Henry Ford once sought to set up his own gas station chain, but was
blocked by the government due to its potential for monopoly (i.e. you
could only buy fuel for Fords at Ford gas stations). Ford is reputed to
have said, "If I can sell gasoline, I could *give* the cars away."
Imagine an EV that goes 150 miles on a charge, and people drive it
15,000 miles a year (so 100 charges a year). Let's say the EV's
manufacturer has a monopoly on charging stations for it, and sets the
price at $10 per 100-miles of charge. That's 10 cents a mile; about the
same as the cost of gasoline.
So the manufacturer collects $1000 a year. That very well *could* pay fo
the car!
Imagine the consumer response to a *free* car that you refuel by just
plugging in at a GM public charging station, or at home on your GM
licensed $5/100 mile charger?
