1) Don't use Lead Acid batteries.  Lithium (used Leaf modules) don't cost much 
more, are lighter, and will last FAR longer.
2) Do you know how much current you were drawing when cruising down the road?  
For my F250, I use around 30KW, for an S10, it will probably be more like 15KW.

Don't use a cheap genset - you'll be polluting as much as a Semi tractor.
