Yes, putting a bunch of lead-acid into anything now doesn't make any sense. Sounds like you are looking for a plug-in hybrid. Why not purchase a wrecked vehicle in this configuration, and transplant the powertrain? A few years ago we did a hybrid van using the powertrain out of a Chevy Volt. (We have since decided to go all-electric)
Also, for the weight of a generator, you might be able to add more lithium to achieve your range targets. Our Promaster Electric Van conversion gets 150 miles even without babying it much.
