This doesn't apply to everyone - it depends on where you live - but if
you're in a moderately populated area, for the $50k you'd pay for a Tesla 3
(I'm assuming $40k for the car and another $10k for the alleged self-driving
option), you could pay a cabbie $25 per trip to take you on local errands
twice a week for 20 years.

Especially if you're older, a decent cab driver would also help you into and
out of the car. He'd probably even carry your groceries in.

But wait, we're not done yet! By not owning a car you avoid license fees
and insurance. On a Tesla that could easily save you $150-200 a month. You
could also rent your garage to a neighbor and pick up an extra $50-100 per
month. With that $250 left in your pocket, you could take 10 more cab rides
per month and still break even. Or you could spend $3000 a year on air
travel.

As a bonus, you'd help the cabbie keep a job and contribute to society by
paying his taxes. All these techbros advocating automation never seem to
think about the fact, or just don't care, that machines don't pay income
tax.
