It's the MPP controller on the inverter that can get confused.  They try to 
load the panel down to it's maximum power point.  As you apply more load, the 
panel voltage drops.  With batteries, the voltage doesn't drop noticeably - and 
some MPP circuits don't have enough brains to limit the current they draw to 
something the circuit can handle.  They just assume the panel can't put out 
enough current to cause problems.
