One thing I've learned is that wearing a well-fitted face mask in winter can help make cold, dry winter air more tolerable. The mask helps retain some of heat and humidity we normally exhale. What is annoying in summer can be a blessing in winter. A well fitted mask will have minimal air leakage above the nose, and thus should not cause eyeglass fogging problems.
I've also found wearing a mask in a car helps prevent vehicle windows from fogging up, even if vehicle HVAC is completely off. Normally comfort dictates keeping HVAC on, but when battery energy budgets are running too thin (say estimating arrival at a charging destination near or below 5% SOC), it is time to activate austerity/miser mode. Conserve energy as much as possible to ensure you reach your next charging location. This may be uncomfortable, but is worlds better than being stranded. (Also remember a battery BMS may have accumulated errors in its battery SOC readings, so a nominal 5% may actually be a 0% if the miscalibration drift is not in your favor.) (Related note: if you see someone wearing a mask in their car mid-winter, they may be in austerity/energy miser mode [in their EV], or may just like how warmer/humid air feels better than cold dry winter air.) On Teslas, 5% SOC on the traction pack is a key threshold because that is the point where the DC/DC converter that maintains the 12v auxiliary battery stops maintaining that battery*. If the 12v battery is already weak, without support from the DC/DC converter, the whole car could shutdown early at a minimum 12v subsystem voltage point, before the traction pack actually hits 0% SOC. Loads on the 12v system can be fairly substantial, so turn off extras like fog lights, fans, radio, heated seats, any other accessories that you can, and dim the dash lighting too. Losing 12v power creates a whole new set of problems, including issues with getting access to the car if all the doors and windows are closed. * at least that is the threshold per discussion at https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/ran-out-of-power …-could-it-be-the-12v-battery.226694/ On Wed, Dec 22, 2021, 14:41 Robert Bruninga via EV <[email protected]> wrote: > My son has a Bolt in Alaska and he has a short 3 mile commute but > has to go to max heater energy just to keep the windows > defogged.
