Competence and intelligence are different things and cannot be subsumed or conflated with or by each other.

That's like saying black and grey are distinct so they can't be conflated. Intelligence is competence at learning. Bruno not only makes a distinction, he holds that they are in opposition. So by his measure a baby in more intelligent than a well educated adult.
