My suspicion is that "personal identity" is a human concept that is evolved mainly to enforce social norms, and that it only works until technologies like duplication machines or mind uploading are created. To illustrate this, I propose a dilemma:
Let's assume I murder someone and then get scanned in Brussels, and reconstructed in Washington. Who should go to jail?
