What I should have said is that your short term memory is the only type of memory that DOES operate while you're asleep. What *doesn't* happen during sleep is transferring the contents of short term memory into medium term memory.
But I still don't see how you expect to remember the last instant you were conscious. Since your short-to-medium term memory transfer doesn't operate when you're asleep, you would expect to NOT remember the 5 minutes (approx) before you fall asleep, and to remember the last 5 minutes of your dreams.
