I read science research every single day. The researchers involved are,
ever-brilliant, as to be expected. But, I am always haunted by the words of
Princeton  physicist Gerry O'Neil, where he said, "scientists tend to
overestimate the impact of breakthroughs, and underestimate the impact of
straight forward extension of the knowledge we already have."

So for example, we may obtain a breakthrough in fusion plasma reactors, but
impact-wise, it may never bring commercial fusion any closer. Plasma driven
spacecraft derived from fusion experiments, yes, lighting homes nope. For
civilization, proving O'Neil's point, I'd look to wind at sea turbine farms,
and home rooftop perovskite solar.

There are molecules that already do this. DNA and polypeptides are sequences

"What You Must Do to Win The Prize

You must arrange for a digital communication system to emerge or
self-evolve without "cheating." The diagram below describes the system.
Without explicitly designing the system, your experiment must generate
an encoder that sends digital code to a decoder. Your system needs to
transmit at least five bits of information. (In other words it has to be
able to represent 32 states. The genetic code supports 64.) "
