To invoke anything physical/apperant will need some highly non computationalist hypothesis in the cognitive science. As physics confirms the most startling consequences of Mechanism (many-worlds and non Boolean (quantum) logic for the Observable, I think that such an idea is premature. The Dream Argument, like the emulation argument, illustrates that observation does not help, and can be misleading, to decide what the fundamental ontology could be. After the discovery of the computer (universal Turing machine) and computations *in Arithmetic*, I think that (weak) materialism will disappear like vitalism has disappeared in biology: an unnecessary superstition.
