I use IMail/Declude to do my filtering before going to Exchange 2000
(gateway filtering). Works great, great support, very very inexpensive.

Any questions? Let me know if I can be of more assistance.

Subject: smtp virus/spam/filter ?

Hi,
I'm looking into a smtp filter to put in front of our ex55+scanmail382.

I'm evaluating Trend Interscan Messaging Security Suite, but it seems
not configurable as I'd like on several parts. For example, the retry
time for deferred delivery seem limited to 99 hours, enough for usual
operation, but what about a disaster recovery gone bad (no or bad
connectivity for some time) ? On the other hand, regarding the
notifications I seems to have a choice of don't attach message/attach
modified message/original message. This means I have to attach the
(possibly big) message to the notification in order to have some info on
the message - with scanmail you can insert markers in the notification
text regarding original subject and so on. A direct link to a web page
in the quarantine area for that message would be usefull, too, with
password check obviously. Or a messageid to paste in the quarantine area
page for direct access to the message. The attachment mimetype/extension
filters can only quarantine the message or strip the attachment, but it
can't strip and quarantine the attachment while delivering the message,
which means it is almost useless for our environment. Scanmail can do
that but has the problem it will run before the virus check - which
means if I filter all PIF and EXE (for example) by policy it will always
strip them and deliver the message, without ever triggering the "delete
mass mail virus emails" rule.

Any suggestions for other products you are particulary satisfied with
(or you advise to avoid) ? Either something in the same or better
league, or something less expensive (that would be the <simple but cheap
input filter, main work still done by scanmail). Either way we would
keep the double filters (scanmail will stay), possibly having the smtp
filter using a different engine could be a plus. In case it matters,
usage is about 350MB-4000 mails/day.

Thanks
Heiko
