For a small shop, this isn't such a big deal. I keep a duplicate HD of the
install of such a system in my office. If the gateway goes down, ipMonitor
will page my Nextel. I come in, replace the HD (if that was the problem)
and restore the config files from the most recent backup. Freshclam will
automatically update the ClamAV virus defs, and I'm ready to go. Power
supply failures are even easier.

Because SMTP is designed to handle such temporary failures, all the messages
will still be delivered. Perhaps a little late, but they get there.

For a larger shop that can't afford that type of downtime, a basic SCSI RAID
controller and two 9GB SCSI drives will do just fine. There's no reason NOT
to build redundancy in, some people just don't need to.

The thing that always gives me pause is that most of these "next to
free" systems aren't redundant. I have all my servers with RAID,
redundant power supplies, and on a UPS. Email is too critical to be left
to a single spindle...

I've heard of some people using a CF card with OS/config. No moving
parts = goodness.
