I am of the same opinion. Using free software doesn't mean you can't use good server hardware (raid, ecc memory, redundant network interface) and/or duplicate the whole hardware by using or more two filter servers, pushing mail through with round robin internal dns records and/or network balancers (radware or whatever you use if any) - after all, going with free servers doesn't mean automatically you have to be cheap for everything.
Thanks everybody for your great suggestions, after all I think I'll experiment with a mta+clamav+spamassasin (or cmr114 ?) before evaluating other commercial software, since this is going to be a "first level" filter in front of Trend products. Even a lowly 90% of success rate (I expect a much higher rate) would mean a lot of free cycles on the main servers, and using open source products could just mean that important different point of view in an emergency. The opposite is true, too - but in that case I have the Trend products. Again, thanks for your input.
