It runs just fine (after updating the W2K schema of course), the number
of features available in that configuration is smaller than if one uses
W2K3 AD. One of those features not available is RPC/HTTP, which appears
to be the feature in discussion based on the thread subject and content.

Not sure that is /strictly/ true, but getting it to work otherwise would
require some serious additional hoop jumping at the very least.
