Our SpamAssassin that's running on four Solaris/Exim boxes (two in US and
two in Europe) once in a while chokes on a piece of mail and bounces it
back. It gets worse when the load on the boxes increases. The situation is
compounded by the fact that we also run Trend Interscan Viruswall on the
same boxes, Trend is acting as a port 25 to port 26 proxy while it is
scanning for viruses. Unfortunately it does not interpret responses
correctly. When Exim gets too busy, it responds with code 421, which means
try later, but Trend re-interprets it into 500 which means go away and don't
try again.

We are currently evaluating Borderware Mxtreme - it seems quite nice and
includes Brightmail engine.

We have also evaluated Cyphertrust Ironmail and it was pretty nice too, lots
of features and very flexible.

Subject: RE: spam solutions

We use a pair SpamAssassin OpenBSD mail relay boxes, but have recently
started looking at a product called "Fluffy", after the dog in Harry Potter,
that will run on a Windows 2003 server. I don't know if we will switch at
this time, but it does the same thing as our SpamAssassin without the
management issues of dealing with Unix/Linux.
