By design it does not. It rejects the envelope so it saves your bandwidth and puts the
stress on the senders server to generate bounces. This also allows many of us to run
on sub 1Ghz machines and still do over 50 thousand emails easily.

Subject: [IMGate] why I hate MS (and love postfix)
Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2004 11:09:33 -0400

I've got an IIS4.0 server that has web sites that send email. I run these
through one of my imgate servers to filter so people can't use them to spam
from our web sites. Normally our mail servers each handle about 10-30k
messages/day, not high volume. Here's the fun part. The SMTP server in IIS4
doesn't understand a 'Sender address rejected: Domain not found' reject from
postfix, it just tries again, and again. It tried over 1.2 million times
yesterday. The thing is, no one noticed anything until I got the report this
morning. The pflogsumm, which starts running at 4:00am just got to me at
11:00am - it took that long to process the log file, which was 1.4GB,
normally they are a few hundred KB. The zip process is still running after
13 minutes, yet mail continues to flow through. This is a PIII 600Mhz with
256MB of RAM and a plain jane IDE drive, nothing fancy. Normally the load is
well under 1.0 but is running around 2.1 for now, yet mail continues to flow
normally.

Thanks to all who made this possible.

Does it have a quarantine area where users could see stuff and check if
something has been trapped by mistake?

IMGATE project (http://imgate.meiway.com/)

*BSD/Linux + Postfix + IMGATE config = almost zero administration and users
don't know its there except for the drop in spam. Most of the IMGATE project
users use FreeBSD but it really works on any OS that can run Postfix. The
IMGATE mailing list is very active so its quite easy to get help if you need
it. :)

Also if you use a *BSD/Linux Postfix outbound server you can speed up your
mail delivery... offloading outbound to a "smart host" makes exchange a
happy camper.

Linux + Exim + Exiscan-ACL + SpamAssassin + ClamAV = happy users and admins.
