It prevents knowledge of what kind of server you are running.

It also prevents extended SMTP commands.

Yes. Why would the PIX interfere with only that message?

Looks like a PIX firewall to me.

Subject: Exchange Server Response to Telnet

We have our Exchange 2003 Server up and running. It sends and receives
email both internally and externally just fine. However, during testing
the SMTP server via telnet, while I am able to send a message, the
initial response to the telnet request is garbled.

The telnet request is:

telnet ourserver 25

The response is

220*********************************************0****0*0
**********************200***0*2**0*00

After that everything works fine.

Does anyone have any idea why it does this or if it will cause a problem
in the future?

Thanks,

Michele Cooper
