I onlt have pocket PC devices so don't use OMA
Trying http:\\servername\oma prompted me for a username/password and
then I got an error

I've tried with the direct IP, and it doesn't work. I recently changed
private IP addresses, but OWA works correctly. Does ActiveSync store IP
addresses privately somewhere?
Also, can you browse to the /OMA on the exchange server? I get a system
error when I try that.

Configure the mobile device to use the IP address, perhaps the carriers
DNS servers are C**p.
Again , check remotely that OWA will work with IP address.
I use the IP address on my HTC Harrier as I don't publish the exchange
server's FQDN

I agree. Using the simulator looks like it would work, but it's more
time to set up. I borrowed a Pocket PC from a coworker, so I'll use
that. People are using OWA with no problems, so it has to be something
specific to activesync. The error that comes up is INTERNET_7, so it
looks like it might be a DNS error. As to why OWA would work with the
same address, I have no idea.

You really need a device to test the problem.
1) active sync logs are on the server search for ex*.log under
%systemroot%
2) if you can OWA to the server via the internet (either via HTTP or
HTTPS) then your good to go
3) you need the error on the device. You need to turn loggin onto
verbose (activesync/tools/server/options) and get a log file to look at.
4) Termporarily allow direct http rather than https, untick the option
to use https and check it works

That is the problem that we're having as well. When my users were here,
I got the phones up and running, but in the field, no dice. Cingular
hasn't been any help, even though I have a feeling that the problem (or
some of it) is within their network.
How did you set up your phone for VPN? I wasn't even aware that was an
option.

I've got one, but the tech support from Cingular/Motorola has been some
of the worst I've ever seen. It took close to a month to get the
ActiveSync working, but I'm going through a VPN to my exchange server
rather than putting exchange out on the internet. I do like the phone,
but I would not recommend to management that we buy them or use
Cingular's service at this point. They never did figure out the issue; I
extrapolated it from looking at a few hundred posts related to the
issue...
Cingular really needs to fix their tech support...
