I can only ask for a backup device per mail server... If it dies, and I
don't have a backup device, then I can't be held responsible if I asked for
the backup device. :-)

Adding my 2 cents...

As someone whose done his share of ESEUTILS on databases under 5.5 and
survived the marathon sessions...let me tell you, find a way to backup
your IS, whatever you do.  I had to threaten the other tech folks at my
firm on pain of death, not to ever do eseutil work on an exchange
database unless unless the world was coming to an end...and even then,
only if its going to end in a bang and not a whimper.

Seriously,  trusting to ESEUTIL alone is a loosing proposition.  One of
these days you are going to run up against a store that you cant repair.
And the repairing really just introduces more problems into the db.

Ahh... Thanks. That's what I was looking for, I believe. I'll make a
note of that!

As for backups, well we just don't have any way to back up the
databases, unfortunately. I wish we did. It would be a great idea! I'll
propose this, but I doubt it'll fly.

resident" file-level scanners: * The Exchange 2000 Server drive M. 
* Exchange databases and log files. By default, these are located in the
Exchsrvr\Mdbdata folder. 
* Exchange MTA files in the Exchsrvr\Mtadata folder. 
* Additional log files such as the Exchsrvr\server_name.log file. 
* The Exchsrvr\Mailroot virtual server folder. 
* The working folder that is used to store streaming temporary files
that are used for message conversion. By default, this folder is located
at \Exchsrvr\MDBData, but you can configure the location.  
* The temporary folder that is used in conjunction with offline
maintenance utilities such as Eseutil.exe. By default, this folder is
the location where the .exe file is run from, but you can configure
where you run the file from when you run the utility.  
* Site Replication Service (SRS) files in the Exchsrvr\Srsdata folder. 
* Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) system files in the
%SystemRoot%\System32\Inetsrv folder.

When a log file goes missing, and an Exchange Database is in an
inconsistent, or "Dirty Shutdown" state you have two options: 1.
Recommended: Restore from Backup. 2. Last resort: Run eseutil /p on the
database, then run eseutil /d on the database, then isinteg -fix -test
alltests

Running through step 2 multiple times is going to land you in more
trouble than you'd ever want to have, because eventually (probably
sooner rather than later) your database will be unrecoverable, and then
ALL YOUR MAIL WILL BE GONE FOREVER.

Just exclude the log file directory from your Antivirus product. There
may be other directories as well - others here will no doubt point you
to them.
