So is your plan to reinstall and patch Exchange using the name of the
existing server or to modify the AD attributes of the user objects to
point them to a new Exchange server? Either works (more or less); each
has its own set of issues.

Make sure you've made the other critical dependencies in your
infrastructure equally redundant. I've had more than one customer who
failed to follow that through to the rest of the infrastructure
messaging requires.

Conversation: secondary Exchange sever
Subject: RE: secondary Exchange sever

Thank you for all of your advice.
I am using good hardware, raid etc.
Basically, I am not look for Auto failover at this time, I am aware of
double take and Failover, I am basically building a box that I can
simply copy the store to, (It is backed up every 12 hours) and put into
production.(Understanding of course that I will need to make the
requisite network and naming changes.

Exchange doesn't support a hot failover server out of the box unless you
are clustering.
As someone else mentioned you could have a second server and it may have
the GAL on it and PF replication, but your mailboxes wont be there and
if the first server fails, the users are not going to fall over to the
secondary server. Pretty much a waste IMHO.
There are some 3rd party programs out there such as DoubleTake that
apparently some folks are using. Not me though.

If I can offer you one piece of advise, it would be to make sure you use
quality hardware. Have a good RAID card and configure your drives for
redundancy.

Hey there...

Exch2000 Ent on Win2000 Svr fully spacked

Ok, I am willing to admit that, maybe JUST maybe, I am a [EMAIL PROTECTED]
but...

I am trying to create a "Backup Exchange serve in the the event of
catastrophe.
I have build the second one and attached it to the domain, it have a
different name and a different IP.
When attempting to connect to it via the outlook client ON the
secondary server, The email server name in the exchange server reverts
to my primary server.

What am I doing wrong here.

Please be kind with the flames as I slipped into a puddle of gasoline
earlier and have not had time to clean up.

Thank you.
