Thanks Ed and you, too, Dean. Howver, I've checked and no user's mailbox is
larger than what would be expected.* I should add that some time ago when the
store limit was reached, I started keeping a log of mailbox sizes weekly
(export and then import into Excel). I did the same this time and could not
see any 'wild' growth in mailbox sizes.
Also, if I sum up all the mailboxes I only get about 10 gig of space yet
Exchange only lists 1.7 gig free as of maintenance on 9/4.
I've been working with E2K for a while now and since we're a small shop, I just
get the experience that other Exchange Admins do, I can't understand how
Exchange can "lose" about 4 gig.

*Although we did have one PA (physician's assistant) who had his Outlook set to
view only the last 7 days. He actually had over 7000 messages. I guess he
must have assumed that Outlook was automatically deleting messages older than 7
days.

Likely a mail loop. Look in the mailbox resources and see if one mailbox is
extraordinarily large, if so, remove its SMTP address. Add a Prohibit Send
and Receive limit to all mailboxes and by policy to the store. Implement
the registry hack to allow the store to grow to 17GB, mount the store, then
delete the instances of looping message from the mailbox.
