Changing your backup scheme based on how long it takes the backup to run
is completely backwards from where I think your concerns should be.
Your backup scheme should consider restore times. A differential backup
will likely increase your restore times, therefore a full nightly backup
is almost always recommended.

Subject: Full/Incremental or Differential backups of exchange databases

Okay, I just want to gauge feedback on the various types of backup for
exchange. In every place I have worked I have always recommended only
doing full backups on a daily basis to clear down the logs and ensure we
have multiple sets of fully recoverable databases, it just seems the
safer option to me and I always recommend against anything else.

In my current project they are saying the backups take to long so a
suggestion has been made for differentials. I am looking to get
professional opinions on the various types of backup ideas so I can put
a formal case forward with my recommendations.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers.
