Jim and Howard,

I suppose, if all else fails, I will be forced to turn on circular
logging. But I really want to figure out WHY it's not working, if I
can.

If the server is only doing transport and doesn't host mailboxes or
public folders why don't you just turn on circular logging?

Subject: Log files not purging...

Configuration:
    - Exchange Servers: Exchange 2003 Native, SP2 on Windows 2003, SP1
(x2)
    - Backup Server: Windows Server 2003, SP1
    - Backup Software: Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers (BEWS),
version 11d (version 11.0, rev. 6235)

Problem:
I have two Exchange servers; one is the mailbox server and has ~1,000
mailboxes. The other one handles all the encryption, inbound/outbound
SMTP, etc. On both servers, I am doing nightly FULL Exchange backups
and telling it to flush the committed log files. I am not doing
brick-level backups on either server.

On the mailbox server it works just fine and the only log files on the
server are the ones since the last full backup...just like you would
expect. However, on the secondary server, it has 7,544 log files,
totaling 36.8 GB of space. This is every transaction log file that has
been created since the day I put the server into production on 3/4/2007.

The backup job is green and says that it's completing just fine, yet the
log files refuse to go away.

Any ideas on why this is happening? Can I just delete the transaction
logs, up to the last full backup?

Thanks,

Jim
