We have it installed here. I liked the support we got from MF better than what
we get from Sonic. However, in their defense, I did talk to the tech support
manager sometime ago and he admitted it dropped a bit when Sonic bought MF. It
is better now.
As to the effectiveness of the product itself, I'd say it catchs about 95%. It
seems that MF takes a while to catch spam when a method is used. Last week,
quite a few spam pdf's got thru before they started getting blocked. I also use
SpamBayes on my pc and it catchs what MF misses.
Having said all that, we are looking at maybe going to a managed service like
Postini. As Dean wrote earlier, bandwidth is also a considertion. Right now,
about 90% of inbound email to us is spam.

You could look at Mailfrontier which is now owned by Sonic.
It's a solid solution not requiring much admin'ing at all.

I am no fan of Sonic's support but the one's I have installed just run and
do it well.
I occasionally have to do an update when they release a newer version

They get an email occasionally (you can define how often) that alerts them
they have email in the quarantine. The email contains a link to the Postini
mailbox. They must enter a password at this point, but the password is in
sync with their password on our DCs, so they don't need to remember another
password. They can also manage (if you want them
to) their white lists, black lists, and spam filter sensitively from this
interface.

Basically, the only thing we have to do is add and remove users and there
are ways to automate that as well, but we have very little turnover here so
we just do it manually.

How do your users check their hosted mailboxes to check for false positives?
I had no problem with the hosted solution, but I spent far more time helping
my users remember how to connect to their remote mailbox than I do now
simply supporting a set it and forget it box.

Sounds like you may have picked the wrong solution provider?

We use Postini and we spend minuscule amounts of time supporting it. I
can't imagine ANY on premise solution that could be as painless as our
hosted solution.

Speaking from personal experience (I went from on premise to hosted back to
on premise) I can tell you that a hosted solution will not save you time. We
were spending easily 10 times the man hours supporting our hosted solution
compared to having it on site. Granted, it easy to get to am increment of 10
when the onsite system takes all of 1 minute per month, but still, hosted
doesn't save you time. (That doesn't mean there aren't other valid reasons
for using hosted solutions.) TVK

Have you looked into a hosted solution? If you have limited staff, adding
another piece of hardware might not be the right way to go.

There are plenty more too.

I've used them all; they all work well, but each has their own nuances.

We are looking to implement an anti-spam appliance. We need something that
is mostly hands-off as we have limited staff. I am trying to compile a list
of possible alternatives and was hoping you kind folks might be willing to
share your suggestions or experiences. It's quite all right with me if you
prefer to respond off list.

Thanks in advance!
