Without going into a lot of proprietary details, suffice it to say that most
of our customers are very large and therefore the SAN engineers are in a
completely different stovepipe than the messaging engineers. Therefore, we
can't tell them how to arrange their disks. What we do is work out an
agreement for a minimum sustained I/O rate for messaging, and leave it up to
them to arrange the LUNs in a way that they can deliver the service level.

If you do have input into the disk array design, and you choose to dedicate
drive arrays for messaging, then I maintain that you must assume that the
disks in the SAN aren't really any different than for locally attached
storage, so the same design criteria must more or less apply. SAN vendors
will tell you that the cache makes up for all throughput problems, but
because Exchange is write-heavy, it'll only delay your problems somewhat.
The problems will still appear after you've stuffed the cache.

Subject: RE: EMC as data store for Exchange?

I do believe you. Just thought the presentation was hard. I would not ask
you if I didn't think you did know.

I was serious, how did you think about an Exchange system of that size and
how did you evaluate and decide on the disk subsystem(s) and the slicing up
of the areas for the different processes?????

Want to learn.....
