I actually know a very smart guy who is somehow a support engineer for CA.

He's quite open about not knowing a single freaking thing about 95% of the
products he supports. He knows a lot about the one piece of software (CA
acquired it from his original employer) for which he was originally trained
as an engineer, but they have had him working on just about everything in
the CA lineup.

They don't train you? I asked once.
"Not effectively. We do a lot of knowledge base searches for people."

Don't you hate your job?
"Yep. But I can stomach it well enough to go back every day."

Why are you still there?
"The money's good. I'm killing time before grad school, which CA will pay
for. And it's sort of nice not to care at all your job. Makes weekends
relaxing."
