I would love to do that, but unfortunately...I can't!

We have never had a dedicated "recovery server" in the 4.5 years I've been
here. I was finally given the money, so I ordered a duplicate to the Compaq
ML380's that we already have. I know I could have made my recovery server
less of high-end machine, but I did it partly for replacement parts if one
fails and partly so I could play around with the exact setup I have in the
production machines.

I ordered this server about 1.5 months ago. It got here about 2 weeks ago,
but it was in such bad shape when UPS delivered it, that all I could do was
laugh and send it back! The face plate was bowed out about 3 inches the
corners were bent and the box was split in two and had been all taped up.
Basically looked like it had been dropped from about 10 feet up and jumped
on by a 800 lb. gorilla! :o)

Hopefully, the replacement will be here soon.

Jim

I vote to leave it along. If you want to run the ESEUTIL tools to check the
health of the store, by all means do so on the restored copy of the database
on your recovery server. I wouldn't mess with it on your production server.

Subject: Excessive whitespace in Priv.edb and Pub.edb...Problem?

Folks,

I have 3 mailbox servers, 1 dedicated IMS server and 1 dedicated bridgehead
server. All three mailbox servers are Win2k SP2 / Ex5.5
SP4+3...the other 2 are the same, but Ex5.5 SP4. Mailbox servers are
Compaq DL380's with 1ghz processors and 512mb of RAM, running on a Raid-5
setup with 5-18gb drives. OS is on one logical drive, logs on another and
stores on a third. IMS and Bridgehead are just old workstations. We are
doing full online Exchange-aware backups, using Veritas 8.5. Circular
logging is on currently. (I know, I know...prior admin forgot to turn off
the default setting...I have a request into our change board to turn it off
on Monday, still awaiting approval.)

Anyway...during the course of the nightly backups / defrags, I get the
messages below. It takes the system about 30 seconds to backup the DS on
each server and about 45 minutes to backup the IS. All would seem pretty
normal to me, if it weren't for the amount of free space in the Private
Store when it's done. Does this much free space seem excessive to anyone
else but me? I added the comments to the end of each message.

I am thinking about doing the following, after 8:00pm this Friday: 1. Stop
all the Exchange services on the servers in question. 2. Do a full offline
backup. 3. Run: eseutil /G /ispriv /V /X /O 4. Run: eseutil /D /ispriv
/P /O 5. Run: eseutil /P /ispriv /V /X /O 6. Restart all my Exchange
services. 7. Pray VERY hard that everything turns out okay.
