That disk you're taking home with you provides the redundancy in your RAID5 system. Think about what would happen if one of the remaining disks failed! And I'd like to see you try to recover data from one disk in a RAID5 array! Clearly this backup strategy has not been tested and all the ammo you need is to show them that you can't recover the system from one disk.

Before fire/flood can happen, you'll probably lose your RAID 5. Currently we are using a VAX tape drive to back up our systems. He seems to think that the hard drive solution sounds like a great idea. I think it's possibly the worst idea ever created. Besides the constant vibrations, and temperature changes that the hard drives would have to withstand could everyone give me some more reasons as to why this is a bad idea. I think I just need a little ammo from other admins to help convince him.
