GD - "it simply isn't done in professional circles"

Isn't done? Don't US companies sponsor university posts in the USA? They
certainly do here in the UK.

If someone sticks the MVP title in their sig I know the deal and can factor
it my opinion forming process, it's open. As a browser, lurker and
occasional contributor to this list it doesn't bother me in the least that
the vendor *of the product I've already got* had made some form of payment
to one of the other contributors.

When I'm interviewing people for a job what am I supposed to think about
someone wearing an MVP tie pin (or whatever the hell you get)? That they
are going to brainwash me? What about someone wearing a "The only good
source is an Open Source" badge?

If I was asking someone to recommend one of a range of products then I
wouldn't go to a vendor of one of those products or someone associated with
a vendor - and as long as the association is made explicit I can avoid that.

People will have preferences, irrational dislikes, over-inflated ideas of
their own importance and all sorts of quirks that I'll have to deal with -
that's fine.

I'd be a lot more concerned is the MVP programme was secret and MVP's were
forbidden from mentioning the fact.

Oh, and it's haemorrhoids.

And aluminium.

Look, if you cannot understand the difference then you are simply not
trying. Did you miss the word "from vendors"? Honorary titles, medals and
other stuff granted on behalf of a professional society to its members is
one thing. Vendors are completely different. If a doctor accepted an
honorary title from a drug vendor like Pfizer, they would most likely lose
their license to practice. But we will never know because it simply isn't
done in professional circles.
