Well, my face was very red after I realized that sndconfig is set up to run properly only in single-user mode in the 6.0 scheme, and it is just as true for the RH version.  I failed to set up a SB Ensoniq in 5.3 and 6.0 but had no trouble in 6.0 after starting up in single mode

LILO: linux 1

Works for me.

So I am guessing that we have a thread or process interfering when we try it in multi-user mode.  I have set up excellent sound with SiS chipsets which others claimed no luck or tinny also unsing linux single.  Of course, there is another resort

/usr/src/linux-2.2.x/Documentation/sound

has some files that can help with isapnp.conf and with modules to load

I have this problem thats really driving me nuts and cannot resolve.  It
deals with my SB PCI128.

I *have* sound, except CD audio.  I can play .wav's ( although many seem
to be terribly distorted, and play fine in windows. ).
Can play .mp3s, movies, etc, except CD's.  I get NO sound.  Yes, turned
up in mixers, cable is good, etc.

If I run sndconfig ( as su AND logging in as root ) I get the initial
screen and it recognizes the card as Ensoniq AudioPCI 1370 ( SB 64/128
PCI ).  It tells me it is playing a sample and no sound, then error
message something like chourus, flange, echo, ( a lot of fx parameters
)..  If I try again it says /dev/dsp not found.  If I try to run
sndconfig again and change it to Ensoniq 1371, it fails, something about
module 1371.o busy or in use.

Anyone got a clue?  This SAME hardware worked PERFECT with Mandrake 5.3,
and when I installed 6.0 I did a wipe of the drive and a clean install.

BTW, I've tried sndconfig with --noautoconfig and --noprobe..  I can NOT
get to the screen where you set up DMA, IRQ, etc.
Can't get there from here!

Please help since this is driving me insane! :O
