Can I assume from this thread that someone has tried the SB Live drivers
with a SB 128 and gotten it to work?

I have a SB 128 PCI and AFAIK it is a totally different card than the SB
Live.
I believe it is a ESS1371 chipset, same as the Ensoniq 128's.
I had good luck using sndconfig under Mandrake 6.0 even though it gave me
the same initial error messages someone else reported. 

You may have luck with the the newest OSS drivers. 
I had to do a:
rmmod sound
rm /lib/modules/misc/sound*
reboot
then run the oss-install script again. bingo.

IMHO the OSS drivers are of better quality than the free ones that comes
as modules.
