Weren't you using the VNC client to view your VNC server
(desktop)?
How could you view the VNC server without running the VNC client?
I'm confused.
With VNC, you run the VNC server on the system whose desktop you
want to view (and control). Then, you use the VNC client to "connect" to
that VNC server, and through the client you can view that desktop.
I found VNC to be considerably faster than X-windows over the
network, although it's still a little slow over the modem.
