Well, first, your machines must agree on a password authentication.

By default, your 98 boxes run encrypted passwords, but on such a simple scheme I
wonder why they bother.

So fire up Linuxconf and encrypt the passwords for samba on the linux box.

If you have done that, then, you may need users defined (with passwords) on the
linux box..  It is NOT sufficient to have them in /etc/hosts, nor is it even
necessary.  It is necessary to add them as users, with the same logins and
passwords as on 98.
