I have had this happen twice, or something very similar with Mandrake
7.0, both times I asked on this list for a way to fix this and both
times I wound up reinstalling as no one including Mandrake had an
answer.
My error looked like this..
"FontTransSocketUnixConnect: Can't connect: errno=1"
"failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1' Fatal Server
Error: could not open default font 'fixed'
Axalon and others had some things to check and some suggestions such
as..from the commandline checking the "status" of xfs
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status
When it bombed for me I had the following returned...
"xfs dead but subsys locked"
Also upon looking in /var/log/messages as Axalon suggested...I saw
the following..
xfs: xfs startup successful
xfs: fatal font server error
xfs: can not establish any listening sockets
It was also suggested to check the permissions on /tmp/.font-unix/fs-1
this is what I got back below;
[d2earth@chopek .font-unix]$ ls -l
total 0
srwxrwxrwx 1 xfs xfs 0 Jan 24 22:08 fs-1=
Supposedly you can hard code your fontpath in the XF86Config,
and it will work, just doesn't support true type fonts.
Well I had no luck with this either and what I do not understand is...
if xfs is dead...what difference does it make which font you use??
I have not powered down my machine since the last time it happened ....as it
seemed to crap out when it was booting back up....twice was enough for
me.
I would really like to know though, if anyone from Mandrake has any idea
what to do if one "can not establish any listening sockets" in the
future.
- good luck -
