Have Linux Mandrake V7.1 (Helium) with kernel 2.2.15-4mdk. Was having a problem with accessing all the files on a remote smbfs directory, and the folks at www.samba.org told me to patch and recompile the kernel up to 2.2.18-pre8 to fix it. So I downloaded the necessary patches from ftp.kernel.org and tried it. Problem: the patches expect a plain vanilla kernel. They don't want to patch the existing mandrake -4mdk mod. Errors abound... So, does mandrake have special patches that can get me up to 2.2.18-mdk-pre8 ? After reviewing the Expert List Archive, I see that another user with the same problem recommends downloading the non-mandrake kernel source from ftp.kernel.org and patching that. But without the mandrake modifications (whatever they are) would that kernel work properly with the other components of Linux-Mandrake? Do other distributions modify the kernel code in this way so that you can't easily patch it? Are Mandrake's modifications that significant? With Linux's non-micro-kernel which has to be recompiled every time a driver is modified, patching & recompiling the kernel should be kept a fairly easy job... or so it seems to me. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Bruce __________________________________________ Bruce LaZerte Grandview Lake in Muskoka Ontario, Canada
