Praedor - the AC97 has always worked well, but with the alsa drivers & kernel module. Sound quality is the same as under my Win98SE side. My problem's arising from this sudden X-session start with all channels muted and the settings not being retained between sessions. Also, for the past couple of days the settings will again go to mute after an indeterminate amount of time & I'll have to restart a mixer & readjust the volume levels. It's very strange. I've upgraded (thru mandrake-update) my modutils & gimp (& related pkgs). I'm also running Evolution. Could any of these have any bearing on sound? I still have the vanilla Mdk7.1 kernel & X 3.3.6. Esound is 0.2.20-0mdk. Mostly run under Helix Gnome, occasionally KDE (1.1.2). Alsa provides the kernel modules. Go to www.alsa-project.org.
