1-It assumes that the recipient can read it, which traditional mail
readers do not accomodate. The words you write are buried in HTML
markup, which obfuscates what you write when read in a non-HTML
capable reader.

2-It wastes bandwidth, something only people who have to pay for their
download time understand. Not everyone who suscribes to a mailing list
has the luxury of free connect time.

3-Usually, it foists upon the reader using an HTML compliant reader
whatever font size you think is appropriate on your system, regardless
of whether it is legible to or appropriate or consistent with the system
of the recipient.

4-To not do it is almost universally part of whatever fair use
instructions accompany your original subscription to any mailing list.
