[expert] securing FTP

Hi all,

I was wondering if there is a good way to secure FTP to encrypt passwords
and logins so they are not sent as straight txt,,,

apart from using SSH...

I have an app that uses standard ftp and I don't have its source...

can anyone suggest anything?

I neeed something that is transparent to the client app...
