So, from reading all the posts here, it seems clear that I should NOT d/l MDK 
8.0...maybe the 8.1 release will work right.

So my question is: I am thinking of shifting from KDE 2.1 over to the latest 
Gnome - although I need to keep both installed because I actually have an app 
or two that requires the KDE libraries. But, I want to try evolution and 
maybe nautilus, esp evolution as I am really in need to an Outlook 
replacement on a Linux system.

How are people finding the latest Helix d/l - working, or not?
