I've bought only one Maxtor for my machines, and I have to admit it worked
flawlessly -- well, it did until I scrambled it while playing around with
Partition Magic. I still have it and intend to try restoring it to working
condition one day because its performance before that serious goof really
impressed me.

My experience is quite different. Although I'm not especially loyal to
Western Digital, most of my hard drives over the years have been WDs and all
have worked acceptably well. Granted, most of their combined use came under
DOS, Windows or OS/2, so my experience with WD drives under Linux is still a
bit limited; but I'm currently running Mandrake 8.0 beta 3 on a 6.4GB WD EIDE
drive, and plan on installing 8.0 "gold" onto its 10GB sibling as soon as my
CD-Rs from Cheap*Bytes arrive. (I originally planned to replace the 6.4GB
unit with a 40GB WD, but held off because I read about problems with Beta 1
on WD drives larger than 8GB.)
The only gripe I have with Western Digital is that they don't include
3.5-to-5.25" bay adapters in their retail packaging.
In truth, the main reason I use WD more than any other brand is availability:
Every local store carries a good selection of WDs but only a few (if any)
units from other manufacturers. A few locally-owned computer shops will
special-order anything I want, and I could always order over the Web -- but
I'm an impatient sort who hates to wait even a few hours for FedEx or UPS to
deliver something I need/want Right Now.
