Hi Dave,
this is a fresh install. I also do have /boot on ext2 and
/ on reiserfs. This worked fine with 2.4.x. After that I installed
2.2.19, made a boot entry (I am using lilo by the way, but it should
work with this version, right?) and rebooted -> problem.
