I had what is described below the first couple of days after building my Duron
800 Mhz, ABIT KT-7 (VIA 133 chipset) system and installing LM8.0. I figured out
that it was experiencing kernel panics, basically losing track of some VFS or
other and freaking out. A few other weird problems with installs and mounting
CDROMS made me think it had something to do with my Matsushita DVD-ROM drive,
and then an instinct told me to try swapping IDE connections -- I moved the DVD
to 0 and the HDD to 1, and everything has been happy ever since.

So, quick recap -- I had my HDD on IDE 0 and DVD-ROM on IDE 1, had kernel
panics relating to file systems disappearing, then swapped to DVD on IDE 0, HDD
on IDE 1, everything got happy.

Maybe this is some clue?
