Dave,
These are typical symptoms of a Star Office install that didn't happen correctly. the
best thing you can do at this point is uninstall it, clean things up in your home
directory and try the install again.
in case you didn't do this the last time run the install as root and use the "/net"
option.
Ex:
./setup /net
after the isntall process as a user run;
/usr/local/Office52/program/bin/soffice
let us know when you're done how you made out.
