Ok, here's what I did:

As a regular user, I ran:

$HOME/office52/setup

And chose deinstall. I checked on the option to delete all files, and then
finally manually removed $HOME/office52 and $HOME/.sversionrc to finish the
cleanup.

As root, I ran:

/usr/local/office52/program/setup /net

Choosing the "repair" option just resulted in a bunch of pop-up boxes
asking me to insert /usr/local/office52. I ignored my way out of that. :-)
Then I ran it again, and this time selected deinstall. Again, I checked
the box to delete all files. Then I manually removed /usr/local/office52
to complete the cleanup. After that, as root I ran:

so-5_2-ga-linux-en.bin /net

(The .bin file above is what I downloaded from Sun's website.) I selected
a Custom Installation so that I can save a little space by removing the non-
US English language modules to save a little space, since I don't use the
others. I told it to install in /usr/local/office52.

As a side-note, I left the "KDE Integration" option set in the "Select SO
5.2 Modules" window, since I use KDE. The description says it "Inserts
StarOffice 5.2 into the KDE front panel." Seems like a pretty good idea,
since I use KDE. :-) Now, I'm not 100% sure what the "front panel" is, but
I certainly didn't see anything new in any of my K menu items....

After the install was completed, as a regular user, I ran:

/usr/local/office52/program/setup

I clicked my way through a bit, and selected a Standard Workstation
installation. I let it have /home/davidg/office52 as the install
directory. When it was done with that, it told me that there was No Java
Runtime Environment was found which can be used by StarOffice (even though
I have it installed in /usr/local/java/jre1.3.1_01). (BTW, if I try
clicking on the "Browse" button, the installation just quits with an error
message in the shell window that started it.) I left it alone for this
install attempt, and let it pick "not supported" as I clicked "ok." It did
its install, briefely complaining that it couldn't find the files needed to
install the Adabas database. (I don't know that that's something I'm going
to need currently, so I don't have it installed.) I clicked on "ok." It
told me that "StarOffice was added to the KDE Panel during the
installation" and that I'd need to restart my KDE for these changes to take
effect. I clicked on "ok" again.

I logged out and then back in to "restart" my KDE session. I don't see any
StarOffice stuff on any of my K menu items. I opened a shell window and
typed:

office52/soffice

to start it. I then go a message telling me that it can't find
/home/davidg/office52/user/sofficerc - again, even though I can clearly see
that the file exists. Argh!

Any ideas? I tried to be *very* detailed about what I was doing, above, in
the hopes that you can spot the step that I'm botching somewhere along the
way....
