I had this same problem last year �scar ..the PPPD and the modem is
working...the trouble is with authenication with the ISP...look to
etc/ppp/options
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets
or pap if you use that
The modem is timing out while waiting for the authentication to get
it's act together.
