My first attempt was with gcc-3.2 but it failed (as usual) with kernel panic 
when I tried to bootup (the specific problem scrolled by too fast for me to 
see if it was XFS-related and I couldn't do Shift-PageUP to look at it).  I 
then switched back to gcc-2.96 and all went well.
