Well it's too late to have it the default in 9.2 but not too late to
make it either a club contrib or an experimental project for 9.x.  As I
see it you would really need 2 versions.  1. for normal desktops 2. for
laptops.  Or some method of taking into account things that the current
system doesn't (Like for a laptop without a built in nic starting
network is a waste, but starting pcmcia is necessary, in it's place.) I
also wonder if the make system could be devised to be intelligent.  IE
if you try to start pcmcia and there is no NIC don't bother starting
network related services.  That alone would make things faster. (proftpd
for example really throws a hissy fit when it can find the net.)
