5.x is much nicer in FreeBSD.  But for me coming from BSD to Linux I've
found the long long long long bash script for init to be a nightmare. 
Basically you are right it's checkconfig without the features *grin*  I
wasn't impressed with Gentoo's init.  Didn't find it that different. 
It's just as long just as convulsive. Of all the points of failure it is
the most vulnerable to even the smallest "oops".
