I have been asking myself this question for quite some time.

I try to install the critical packages (those running as service or being
invoked quite frequently, like evolution) using the developers packages and
not those one coming in the distro CDs. This way, when a security
vulnerability is fixed I just upgrade without waiting for Mandrake to build
their own version of the package, which BTW they do pretty fast.
